Thom Mayne has had a controversial and ground breaking career, and this proposal in the Swiss Alps seems both fitting and appropriate yet at the same time very provocative. The alps are one of the most amazing mountain ranges in Europe if not the world and it is surprisingly undeveloped. During my travels in the Ticino province, there are small farms scattered across the valleys, yet there are few places beyond the urban cores that you find suburban sprawl or even heavy development. Mayne’s proposal is an interesting take on this desolate landscape. How do you develop a region that is both rich in heritage and sensitive in habitat on a large scale. His proposal is a strong break from the vernacular context, yet it is a very efficient use of the sensitive land. Any thoughts?
