I bet the psychology departments of Christian and secular schools are burning: yes, a well intentioned kid was arrested for bringing a clock to school. It raises the question of what is freedom? GOP candidates argue that it is protection and some argue it is choice, and I think it is a combination of the two. Sorry Texas, but the United States protects religious and personal freedom, which includes the right of Middle Eastern citizens to carry luggage shaped clocks. We aren’t protecting our freedom if we can’t protect people’s right to create and believe what they believe. This touches on all sorts of issues like NSA surveillance, police warrant rights, even down to city planning approvals for religious groups. It will be interesting to see how Texas policy and often time flagrant Americanisms that radiate from their society will adapt to the media attention from the discrimination shown towards a little 14 year old American citizen.
