As a kid, I attended church with my family nearly every week. We did not have the coolest items, even though I had a few cool things. I was always waiting for the Sunday paper to reveal something cool that would solve a lifestyle issue, exempli gratia a wireless modem to eliminate cabling. The world I knew did not expect much and did not move incredibly fast. Average American, living simply. Now, I have some of the most advanced pieces of technology to keep my world simple – like a wireless internet box instead of land line connection and a mobile phone that is more powerful than some computers. This morning I was reading the Washington Post about a young prodigy that had a schizophrenic episode and I think a part of the problem is our society is processing a lot more information with our minds than previous. Previously, worlds were separate – the church, D.C., fashion, and professions. Now, people seem to be feeling the need to be perfecting their skills because the digital realm puts pressure on the entire system. The mind needs to rest and focus – simple. How are we going to protect our minds from cultural phenomenons and overload in the coming age?
