I was recently in a group discussion of topics like race, gender, sexual orientation and equality (including a presentation by Author and Lawyer John Inazu). There are a number of ways in which we create culture around us, and are our societal structures creating healthy communities for the future? Growing up in greater Los Angeles region, race is practically transparent across a populous of 18 million people. Social divide is often more classicistic by profession and wealth – and even then there is still a fair amount of social integration. When a society can’t help but being integrated it produces a level of understanding that creates healthy communication. Moving to Oregon, I am more aware of race and social divide. While it is a progressive society that seamlessly integrates without much distinction, I tend to notice it more. Will the society of the future push cultures to create pockets of uniformity or will we grow in understanding of difference and pluralism?
