There are daily rhythms that can take away meaning and value to some of the most valuable cultural verses of tomes. Prior to the birth of Christ and even the classical period, David wrote a form of worship now denoted as Psalm 7. The author of the Psalm is in submission to the Jewish deity and expresses a request to have the almighty come to his defense and offers praise in accord with the Lord’s righteousness. Religion has spent many years propitiating truth and ruling on the maxims of life to bring a society to peace and redemption. It is easy to forget in a modern society the value of expressing worship to the almighty and I am thankful for the forgiveness of imperfection bestowed on those who believe. The Bible is a published document of the words reproduced by masoretes and other earlier scribal documents to communicate the fulfillment of a covenant.
In the last few months my designs have pushed toward the high end and utilized finer materials, my current favorite is brass. On a daily basis I wear a brass finished watch but there are many examples of fine metals brazed and in fine metals in the pure. Brass making has developed in the last two thousand years and is known for its malleability under the right forge; the art of metal making is advancing and the work of a blacksmith is incredibly expensive in today’s economy, but fabrication processes are augmenting that with advanced computer tooling. The art of metal making is moving from precision work in the shop to a refining process that starts in the digital realm. But, don’t throw away the papyrus yet – design is still process driven from a roll of trace and hand formed studies. My latest design investigation is my design of brass tea cup that has a tactile triangulated figuring with traditional saucer. Tradition with a contemporary understanding is forming value for the future.
Christianity and the Judeo-Christian world have been at it for a while, Christianity is approaching two thousand years of awaiting God’s promises. In the pursuit of forgiveness and renewal the world has changed and civilized; order and wisdom exist largely in part to civilization being adjacent to religion expounding truth. The Christian world has faith that Jesus is fulfilling the Torah’s requirement for sacrifice in an eternal covenant and that it is freely given to those who believe. Recent events have undermined order in this world primarily because of the attack of the church removing goodness from people through advanced means. A future proof needs to understand that this world needs renewal and clean hearts that are free to think and believe.
While I have not seen a strong leader for the 2020 Republican platform, I look forward to seeing someone like Paul Ryan run to represent conservatives against an Independent Trump and Democratic candidate. The Republican party needs to be conservative.
Looking a cultural phenomena – California is an interesting case study. Years ago, I visited the USC curated Greene and Greene Gamble house in Pasadena. The Bungalow style has a spatial feature called the engelnook – a partially enclosed room adjacent to the fireplace with seating. California code now restricts the use of wood burning stoves and requires more ecologically friendly options, and there are a few implications on space that push away from the traditional spaces and homes with engelnooks: ipad lounge next to heater pump vent, laptop station / creative center, thermal underwear, the local coffee shop, continuous extruded polystyrene. In the meantime, there are some pros to cozy space and tradition – especially from the arts and craft movement has produced some fine spaces. When considering cultural progression, it is often keen to not forget the function of traditional elements that have defined America. As multifamily starts to become more of a reality the AECO community will need to infuse value so that we do not introduce second world living to the United States.
Formal elements of traditional design ran out of vogue in the post modern and contemporary era but as we transition into the contemporant world tradition is of high value and even vogue. Roof tiles are an interesting product that traditionally was formed from the maker’s quad. Fabrication technique has since evolved but the formal proportion of the human is often lost in fabrication techniques and product requirements. Design has responded with advanced products that are ever evolving thanks to the teaching of high level design techniques and valuable resources. I recently completed another formal exercise in product development of a wooden lightly cantilevered stool. Brass, wood and fabric to introduced a human feel to the fabrication method and create an iconic favorite piece. Three days: sketch to Autocad LT to Rhino to print. Intention is a guide and proportion is a decision maker. For those interested in fabrication here is a list I put together for advanced digital means:
BJ Binder Jet Printer
DLP Printer Digital Light Projector
DMLS Printer Direct Metal Laser Sintering
EBM Printer Electronic Beam Melting
FFF Printer / FDM Printer Fused Filament Fabrication / Fused Deposition Molding
LOM Laminated Object Manufacturing
MJ Material Jetting
SLA Printer StereoLithography
SLM Printer Selective Laser Melting
SLS Printer Selective Laser Sintering
Congratulations to published and awarded Architect Anthony Poon for his AIA National award at this year’s convention. He has provided the context of good production homes that follow very strict modern ethos to provide a contemporary living environment that appropriately moves the profession of Architecture forward. He has design and built (through Alta Verde Group) production homes that challenge the base quality of custom design in steel and glass. The formal of language of modernism is a little bare and Architecture needs order. It reveals some of the formal realities that appear lazy in residential spaces that are commonly industrial and ultimately challenges this world to hire better designers.
One of the finest collections of biomes in the world: Arizona. It is home to 556 birds of the 1103 / 2127 species listed in America and home to an abundance of wildlife. The wildlife roam across plains and mountains, from the fleeting fox to stinky javelina. The Arizona mule deer is one of the most interesting species that thrives in the mountains of Arizona thanks to the abundance of year round water sources. But a recent facebook photo shows a baby Arizona mule deer with a terrible taxidermy. Humans have hunted a species that would likely be a little thirstier but thriving above the desert floor with the human habitation. It is likely that people have been taking them straight from the National Forests (absolutely without permit) and it is very concerning that poachers will ruin a species that grazes appropriately to bring fertile lands. The species will ultimately not be endangered but they have less natural habitat – and Arizona is a very important ecosystem to value.
Reviewing the top scores for Architecture programs it is clear that Southern California is a top ranked learning metropolis. I am proud that California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is ranked 12th in undergraduate Architecture programs, with the best above them. My graduating class bumped the institution up to 15th in 2008 and I hope that their quality professors and facilities can maintain that good design culture. Recently, I revisited some of my classical training from before my Bachelor of Architecture with a proportion study, and, I started studying the gothic arch. My study produced an arch that I used to combine with a traditional spanish oval window in an exercise to establish the design of emergent residential through traditional form techniques. The bare bones of the house came from a hyper efficient plan I designed earlier this year and I modified it to accommodate a second floor. After studying the aggressive form I did an additional design study of spanish, colonial spanish and gothic producing an interesting result utilizing an easy to build primary structure. I again reiterate that classical form has a value that is more proven than modern, but modern space maintains an incredible connection to the spatial qualities like the outdoors and often times maintains a very high functionality. Fabrication technique of the future will likely start informing the production world.
Currently, prefabrication of standards homes is not on a large scale. Building tract homes are the jobs that afford a significant portion of the basic needs of a society; introducing machinery to replace jobs is controversial but might be necessary for the demand required. With urbanization, towers and mid rise will likely start densifying and fortifying tract development communities similar to Rancho Cucamonga, but inland communities enjoy space (unless you are in Phoenix and pay for volume of air needing to cooled). The future is arriving with developed contemporary convenience.
The velocipede was an early bike that revolutionized travel. Iterations of fixed gear and eventually geared chain driven mechanisms propelled the frame forward. Drive shaft bikes and foldable bikes like biomega have been cool, but CeramicSpeed just introduced a new drive shaft with a beautiful design for a derailer. Effort to propel a person has greatly been reduced in resistance and the French invention has been revolutionized again.
